Norma Hornberger, named as queen of the Asbury Park Carnival, stands at the center of her maids of honor in this glass negative. Asbury Park, on the New Jersey shore, drew large summer crowds in the early twentieth century, and resort carnivals often used a queen and her court to attract attention and press coverage. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made pictures like this for newspapers and magazines, so the image was likely meant as a publicity photograph. The title comes from caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact date of the event is uncertain.
