A water carnival sponsored by the New York City Department of Parks gives this 1936 silkscreen its subject, with its promise of music, dancing, and singing set against the water. The Federal Art Project's New York poster division made posters like this one to advertise free public events during the Depression, when city recreation programs drew large crowds to parks and pools in summer. The silkscreen method, which the WPA poster workshops used widely, allowed artists to print bold flat areas of color cheaply and in large runs. Posters of this kind were meant to be read quickly from a distance, so their clear shapes and vivid palettes still stand out today.
