The poster advertises a staging of Engelbert Humperdinck's *Hänsel und Gretel*, the 1893 German opera drawn from the Grimm fairy tale about two children who meet a witch in a house made of gingerbread. Its subject list also notes animals and dancing, which suggests the design leans into the fairy-tale scenery. Issued in 1936 under the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, it was one of many posters that promoted low-cost performances to Depression-era audiences in Los Angeles. The silkscreen process gives it flat, saturated color blocks, a hallmark of WPA poster design.
