In 1936, a Los Angeles production of Engelbert Humperdinck's *Hansel and Gretel* was adapted for children and promoted under the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration. Humperdinck's opera, first staged in 1893, sets the Brothers Grimm fairy tale to music, and the adaptation brought it to young audiences during the Depression, when the Federal theater Project put working theater artists back on stage. The poster itself was printed in silkscreen, a low-cost method the WPA poster divisions used to produce bold, flat areas of color in large runs.
