Offering free English classes in New York, this 1936 silkscreen poster promises to help adults speak, read and write the language their children use every day. The Star of David in the design points to the city's large Jewish community, many of whose families had arrived from Eastern Europe in the decades before the Depression. The classes were run by the WPA's Adult Education Program with the city Board of Education, part of the broader New Deal effort to put artists and teachers to work. Its bold flat colors were typical of the Federal Art Project's inexpensive public notices.
