A silkscreen poster from 1936 sets its message in stark terms: diphtheria, a bacterial illness that could kill children quickly, and a plain instruction to protect them with toxoid, the vaccine then used against it. The poster was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, and it was commissioned by the Chicago Department of Health to promote its public-relations push for immunization. Diphtheria toxoid had been in use since the 1920s, and campaigns like this one were central to bringing childhood death rates down during the Depression years.
