Few posters from the period promise swimming instruction so directly, calling for classes for all ages in every pool in the city. Designed by John Wagner and printed in silkscreen in 1936, it was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, whose poster units issued public notices on health, recreation, and other community services. The 1930s saw New York build many new public pools, and this print's catalog subjects also include segregation, a reminder that access to those pools was not equal for everyone.
