Training for war work is the subject of this 1941 silkscreen, produced under the Federal Art Project to promote federally sponsored classes for industry. The record ties it to the University of Southern California and to Los Angeles, where defense training programs in 1940 and 1941 were preparing workers for the aircraft, shipbuilding and machine trades that expanded before the United States entered World War II. The WPA poster division favored silkscreen because it allowed inexpensive runs of bold, flat color that could be posted in public places, and here that method carries a direct appeal to skilled labor as the nation mobilized.
