Printed as a silkscreen in 1936, this WPA poster promotes practical training courses for licensed and unlicensed seamen, and its caption sends applicants to the Coast Guard, local Collectors of Customs, and seamen's organizations. It was issued during the Depression, when the federal Works Progress Administration employed artists to design public information posters, and when the newly created United States Maritime Commission was working to rebuild the nation's merchant fleet and its supply of trained sailors. Artist Richard Halls, born in 1906, designed it. Its straightforward recruiting message makes it a useful record of how the government presented skilled maritime work to the public.
