This 1940 poster ties a summer pastime directly to public health, urging people to swim in pools that are safe and pure. Its subject headings point to Ohio, and the back is stamped July 20, 1940, placing it in the height of the summer season. Produced under the Federal Art Project of the Work Projects Administration, the silkscreen color print reflects the New Deal effort to put artists to work while carrying public health messages into ordinary communities. Its association with the Food and Drug Administration shows federal concern with sanitation at the time.
