A silkscreen poster from 1936 advertises a production of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera "Hänsel und Gretel," staged under the sponsorship of the Federal theater Project. The Federal theater Project was one of the arms of the Works Progress Administration, and it put professional theater and opera before public audiences in communities that rarely saw live productions. Its posters were designed by artists working in the WPA's graphic program, often using bold flat color and simple shapes that could be printed cheaply in quantity. The subject tag places this performance in California during the 1930s, a reminder of how widely the federal arts projects reached beyond New York.
