This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a production of *The Mikado*, sponsored by the Federal Music Project, a unit of the Works Progress Administration that put unemployed musicians to work during the Great Depression. Its record places the production in California. Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert first staged the comic opera at London's Savoy theater in 1885, and its fictional Japanese setting and patter songs made it one of the most performed Gilbert and Sullivan works in the United States. The WPA poster shops used silkscreen to produce inexpensive, bold posters that promoted these community events.
