This silkscreen poster advertises a Cincinnati staging of *The Mikado*, the 1885 Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, presented under the Federal theater Project in 1936. The Federal theater Project was a branch of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that put unemployed artists, writers and performers to work during the Great Depression. Its productions were often staged at low ticket prices so that ordinary audiences could see live theater. The Work Projects Administration Poster Collection holds many such posters, and the bold flat color and simplified shapes typical of silkscreen show how the program used graphic design to promote its shows.
