Cincinnati's Federal theater unit printed this poster for Gilbert and Sullivan's *The Pirates of Penzance*, which may explain its place among the river pictures, since the opera's pirates and seafaring plot share the nautical theme. The Federal theater Project was a New Deal program run under the Works Progress Administration from 1935 to 1939. It employed out-of-work actors, designers and stagehands to stage plays for public audiences across the country, often at low ticket prices. The opera itself premiered in New York in 1879, and its comic operetta style made it a popular choice for community theater productions of the 1930s.
