A 1936 poster for Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera *The Mikado* in El Centro, California, it was sponsored by a music teachers' association under the Federal Music Project, a New Deal program that employed musicians and music teachers during the Depression. Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert first staged the work in London in 1885, and it remained one of the most performed operettas in the English-speaking world. WPA artists often used silkscreen, a stencil process that allowed bold, flat areas of color to be printed cheaply in large runs.
