Built on a man-made island in San Francisco Bay for the 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition, Treasure Island was the setting for this Federal theater Project poster advertising a "Swing Mikado" with a cast of 100. The production reworked Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta in a jazz-age style, a choice that reflected the Federal theater's interest in fresh, popular stagings. The Federal theater Project was one of the Works Progress Administration's arts programs, employing theater workers across the country during the Depression. Its posters, like this silkscreen, were designed to draw audiences to live performances at a time when many people could not otherwise afford them.
