Set against the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939, this poster advertises a swing-music staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's *The Mikado*, the 1885 comic opera, produced by the Federal theater Project. The Works Progress Administration's theater arm recast the operetta in the jazz idiom of the day, and the poster's billing of a cast of 100 and a "sensational success" reflects the scale and publicity the production sought. The fair itself drew crowds to the artificial island in San Francisco Bay, and the poster shows how federal arts programs reached those visitors. Its silkscreen color is typical of the WPA poster workshops of the period.
