A silkscreen poster from the Federal Music Project announces a cast of 100 for The Gondoliers, the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, staged in Ohio in 1936. The Federal Music Project was one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration, created during the Great Depression to put musicians and performers back to work and bring live music to communities that rarely saw it. Its posters were printed through the WPA's silkscreen workshops, which turned the technique into an inexpensive way to advertise public concerts and productions. The Gondoliers, first staged in London in 1889, is a light comedy about two gondoliers who discover they were switched as infants.
