This poster advertises *Native Ground*, a play by Virgil Geddes staged under the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that put unemployed theater workers to work during the Depression. Its subject headings point to farming and plows, which suggests the play's rural themes shaped the design. The silkscreen process was a practical choice for WPA poster shops, which could produce bold, flat color in quantity on a tight budget. A date stamp on the back, Jan. 5, 1939, shows the sheet was still in circulation after its 1936 production.
