A 1936 silkscreen poster announcing a San Diego production of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera *The Pirates of Penzance*, which was first staged in 1879. The San Diego Symphony Association sponsored the show, and the Federal Music Project and Federal theater Project are also credited, reflecting the New Deal's effort to keep performers employed during the Depression. Silkscreen posters like this one were produced by the Works Progress Administration's art project to promote concerts, plays and community events across the country. Its bold flat colors and simplified lettering show the graphic style that made these posters distinctive.
