A 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a California production of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera *Hänsel und Gretel*, sponsored by the Federal theater Project. The Federal theater Project was a branch of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that employed artists, writers, and performers during the Great Depression, and it staged productions across the country, often at low ticket prices. Humperdinck, a German composer, wrote the opera in 1893, and its fairy-tale story and folk-style music made it a favorite for family audiences. Posters like this one, printed by hand in silkscreen, were both publicity and a record of the program's reach into local communities.
