Long Beach, California, is the place that sets this poster apart: a local American Legion post sponsored this 1936 production of Oscar Straus's operetta, and the Works Progress Administration printed the silkscreen advertisement. Straus based the work on the German title *Der tapfere Soldat*, and it was adapted from George Bernard Shaw's play *Arms and the Man*, which gives its comic story of a reluctant hero. The poster reflects the New Deal's Federal Art Project, which used silkscreen to produce low-cost, colorful notices for community events during the Depression.
