A 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a San Diego staging of *The Chocolate Soldier*, sponsored by the Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration together with the San Diego Symphony Association. The operetta was composed by Oscar Straus, whose German title is *Der tapfere Soldat*, and it adapts George Bernard Shaw's play *Arms and the Man*, a satire of war and romance. Federal Music Project posters like this one promoted live performances across the country during the Depression, bringing light opera and orchestral music to local audiences at low cost.
