A 1936 silkscreen poster announces a San Diego staging of *The Chocolate Soldier*, the operetta by Viennese composer Oscar Straus, whose German title, *Der tapfere Soldat*, appears in the record. The piece premiered in Vienna in 1908 and was adapted from George Bernard Shaw's comedy *Arms and the Man*. The poster was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Music Project together with the San Diego Symphony Association, part of the federal effort to keep musicians working and bring live performance to local audiences during the Depression.
