Staged in Santa Ana and promoted under the Los Angeles Federal Music Project, this 1936 silkscreen poster advertises *The Chocolate Soldier*, with the Orange County Drum & Bugle Corps as sponsor. The operetta by Oscar Straus premiered in Vienna in 1908 as *Der tapfere Soldat*, adapted from George Bernard Shaw's satire *Arms and the Man*. The Federal Music Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed out-of-work musicians and brought operettas and operas to communities beyond the big cities, and posters like this one told local audiences what was coming. Worth noticing is the flat, bold color typical of silkscreen, a method the WPA poster units used to make inexpensive, eye-catching runs.
