Pasadena's United Service Clubs sponsored this 1936 silkscreen poster, which advertised a local staging of Oscar Straus's operetta *The Chocolate Soldier*, known in German as *Der tapfere Soldat*. The Works Progress Administration's Federal Music Project put many unemployed musicians to work during the Depression, and community productions like this one brought light opera and operetta to audiences who might not otherwise have seen them. Straus's comic work, first staged in Vienna in 1908 and adapted from George Bernard Shaw's *Arms and the Man*, was a popular choice for such shows. The poster's bold color printing reflects the WPA's wider program of inexpensive, eye-catching publicity art.
