Staged at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, this 1936 silkscreen poster announces a production of Georges Bizet's opera *Carmen*, adapted from Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella. It was sponsored by the Federal Music Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, together with the Arthur L. Peterson Post No. 47 of the American Legion. During the Depression the Federal Music Project employed musicians and put on low-cost concerts and operas across the country, and WPA artists produced posters like this one to advertise them. Its flat, bold colors reflect the screen-printing method the program often used for local event notices.
