This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a presentation of Georges Bizet's *Carmen* in Los Angeles, sponsored by the Federal Music Project. The opera is adapted from Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella and premiered in Paris in 1875. The Federal Music Project was one of the Works Progress Administration's arts programs, created during the Depression to employ musicians and bring live performances to communities that rarely saw them. Like other WPA posters, this one uses bold, flat color and simplified shapes, a style suited to the mass production of silkscreen prints.
