This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a Los Angeles production of *Carmen*, Georges Bizet's opera, sponsored by the Federal Music Project. The opera is drawn from Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella about a seductive cigarette factory worker and the soldier who falls for her, and Bizet's 1875 Paris premiere made it one of the most performed works in the repertory. During the Great Depression, the Federal Music Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, put musicians to work and brought low-cost concerts and operas to ordinary audiences. Its posters are a record of that effort to make classical music a public experience.
