Fireworks light up the night sky above a mock assault on an ice fortress in this 1909 view of a midwinter carnival on Upper Saranac Lake in New York's Adirondacks. Winter carnivals were a popular attraction in the Saranac Lake area, where resort visitors gathered on the frozen lake for sports, parades and spectacles built from ice. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that produced travel and scenic views for promotion and sale, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, which captures the scale and drama of the event after dark.
