Miss Nancy Rowe, identified on the caption card as a competitor in the fancy skating contest at the St. Paul Outdoor Sports Carnival, appears on the ice in a picture dated February 1, sometime between 1908 and 1916. St. Paul's winter festivities drew large crowds in those years, and fancy skating, with its figures, spins and graceful edges, was a popular event for both skaters and spectators. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a news photography service whose pictures documented current events for newspapers. Its caption card also tags it under sports and St. Paul, Minnesota.
