Accordion players are the focus of this stereograph, which shows musicians among a crowd during a Russian carnival in Petrograd. The city had taken that name in 1914, replacing the German-sounding St. Petersburg, and by around 1919 it was living through the upheaval of the 1917 revolutions and the civil war that followed. Russian carnival festivities trace back to Maslenitsa, the pre-Lent celebration known for music, food and public merrymaking. Keystone View Company published stereo cards like this one for American parlor viewers, so a street scene from Petrograd reached audiences far from Russia.
