The name at the top, "Original Nashville Students," is what sets this poster apart. It advertises a troupe that borrowed a name from the Black vocal groups tied to Nashville's Fisk University, which had toured widely since the 1870s, and the head line claims "25 years before the public." Printed in color by the U.S. Printing Co. of Cincinnati and New York in about 1899, the lithograph pairs the show with Gideon's Big Minstrel Carnival. Its subjects, which include dandies, dogs, and minstrel stock figures, reflect the caricatured portrayals of Black Americans common on 1890s minstrel posters.
