Piccadilly Circus is named for the round junction where several London streets meet, and this card's title casts that busy crossing as a modern Babylon. The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, crowned by the winged figure commonly called Eros, had been unveiled there in 1893, only a few years before this stereograph was issued. Published around 1896 by the New York firm Strohmeyer & Wyman, it was made for American parlors, where viewers slipped such cards into a stereoscope to see the street in depth.
