Piccadilly Circus, the busy junction where several major London streets meet, is the subject here, and the record notes the omnibuses that crowded its roadway in the years before the First World War. Buses of this era were open-topped, horse-drawn or early motor vehicles that shared the street with pedestrians, cabs and carts, so the scene shows how the junction handled a growing flow of traffic. The square had been laid out in the early 1820s and was already one of the city's great commercial and entertainment hubs by the 1900s. The photograph offers a useful record of street life just before the wartime changes that reshaped London's traffic.
