Piccadilly Circus takes its name from the round junction where Regent Street, Piccadilly, and several other streets meet, not from any circus show, a point that is easy to miss on a board of circus subjects. The junction took shape in the early 1800s as part of John Nash's Regent Street scheme, and by the 1890s it was one of London's busiest crossings. The Shaftesbury Memorial, popularly called Eros, was unveiled at its center in 1893, so a view from around 1895 would have shown the recently installed fountain amid crowds, carriages, and omnibuses.
