A caged lion rides on a wagon at the head of this parade, with a circus tent rising behind it, a scene meant to draw crowds to the show before it ever arrived. The poster was printed around 1891 by the Calvert Lithographing Company, a Detroit firm whose bright chromolithographs circuses ordered in quantity to be pasted across towns. Parade scenes like this were among the most common images of the era, since the procession was the show's best free advertisement.
