A caged lion rides on a wagon at the front of this street parade, with a circus tent rising behind the procession to signal where the show was headed. Chromolithographs like this were the main way traveling circuses advertised in the early 1890s, when color printing had become cheap enough to produce posters in large runs. The Calvert Litho. Co., a Detroit firm known for circus work, printed this sheet and registered its copyright. Parade scenes like this one promised spectacle, with exotic animals and crowds, and they were posted on walls and fences well before a show arrived in town.
