Rothern Bridge spans the River Torridge at Torrington, a market town in Devon in southwest England, and it is one of the town's oldest river crossings. This photochrom print comes from a series of English views that the Detroit Publishing Co. issued in the early 1900s, though the photograph itself was taken in the 1890s. Photochrom was a color process that combined a black-and-white photographic negative with several hand-applied lithographic stones, so each print was colored by hand rather than by camera. Its soft, painterly tones make the bridge and the river setting a useful record of how a small English town looked at the close of the nineteenth century.
