The English Bridge crosses the River Severn at Shrewsbury, the market town in Shropshire, and this print shows it as a stone span carrying the road into the old town. The bridge dates to the late 18th century and was built to replace an earlier crossing, making it one of the town's key entry points. This view was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photography with hand-applied color from several lithographic stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in the United States around 1900. Its catalog entry places it in the company's series of English scenes, which offer a useful record of how the town looked at the turn of the century.
