The view centers on the bridge at Chepstow, a market town where the River Wye forms part of the border between England and Wales. The Wye bridge there was an early chain suspension bridge, completed in 1816, and it carried road traffic across the river for generations. This photochrom print was made by a Swiss process that produced vivid color from several stone or plate impressions, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers through its catalogues. Dating from the late 1890s, the print shows an England still reached mostly by rail and river, when travel guides and tourists favored scenic places like this one.
