Bonchurch Pond, a small freshwater pond in the village of Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight's south coast, is the subject here, set among the village's trees and cottages. The image was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photographs with hand-prepared color stones to produce vivid prints. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America as scenic souvenirs, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of English views. Its bracketed date places the original photograph in the 1890s, when Victorian travelers prized images of quaint English villages.
