Freshwater Bay, on the Isle of Wight's southwest coast, takes its character from the natural stone arch and the offshore rock called Stag Rock, which anchor this view. The scene was recorded as a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that combined photography with hand-prepared lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in the United States, and this example appears in its 1905 catalog of England scenes. Victorian travelers prized seaside sights like this one, and the process gives the cliffs and water a soft, layered warmth.
