Alum Bay, at the western tip of the Isle of Wight, is known for its cliffs banded in red, yellow, violet, and white sand, which stand out sharply above the bay. Just offshore rise the Needles, a line of chalk stacks that mark the island's western edge. This print comes from a Detroit Publishing Company catalog issued in 1905, and the view itself was likely made between about 1890 and 1900. The photochrom process behind it, developed in Switzerland, printed a photograph in several lithographic colors, which gives the cliffs and sea their bold, saturated tones.
