Ventnor, on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, is pictured here as seen from the sea, a vantage that places the town along the shoreline. The view dates from roughly the 1890s, when Ventnor was a popular resort valued for its mild air and sheltered position on the Channel. The print is a photochrom, a color process of the period, and this example is number 10288 in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of English views. Scenes like this show how seaside towns presented themselves to travelers at the close of the nineteenth century.
