Carisbrooke Castle stands on a hill above the town of Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. Its earthworks date to the Iron Age, and the Norman keep and later walls gave it a long career as a fortress. Its most famous prisoner was King Charles I, held here in 1647 and 1648 before his failed attempt to escape. This photochrom print, made by the Detroit Publishing Co. in the 1890s, shows the castle in the process's vivid, hand-colored tones. Those colors give a sense of how travelers of the period saw English historic sites.
