Durham Castle stands on a rocky bluff above a bend of the River Wear, sharing its peninsula with the cathedral next door. William the Conqueror had the Norman fortress built after 1072 to hold the north of England, and for centuries it was the residence of the prince-bishops of Durham. This Photochrom print, made by a Swiss color process that Detroit Publishing Co. sold in America, gives the weathered stone a soft, painterly finish. Such color views were popular with travelers and armchair tourists in the 1890s, when the image was likely made.
