Okehampton Castle stands on a steep ridge at the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, its ruined walls overlooking the valley of the River Okement. Norman lords built it soon after the conquest of 1066 to hold the surrounding land and control the routes onto the moor. This print is a photochrom, a Swiss process that combined a black-and-white photograph with several hand-prepared stone plates to add color. The Detroit Publishing Company issued its English views in a catalog around 1905, marketing them to American travelers and armchair tourists.
