Mont Orgueil stands on a rocky headland above Gorey on the east coast of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, and its medieval walls still dominate the approach to the harbor. The castle was built after England lost Normandy in the early 1200s, and it was later strengthened and altered over the centuries as the island's main defense. This view comes from the photochrom process, a color printing method that Detroit Publishing Company used under license from a Swiss firm, and its catalog number places it among the company's widely sold England views of the 1890s and early 1900s.
