Moulin Huet is a steep, wooded valley on the western coast of Guernsey, and this print is titled for a water lane there, a rough path where the stream runs down toward the sea. The Channel Islands drew many nineteenth-century painters and writers, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir worked at Moulin Huet in 1883. The image is a photochrom, a process that printed color from photographs using stone lithography, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold these views of Britain and Europe to American buyers. The record dates it to roughly the 1890s, a period when such hand-colored-looking travel pictures were popular.
